The Echo and creative effects
While you are thinking about The Echo you most likely think "delays" right? Normally I would use the Echo just as a delay buy with a touch of magic on the delay itself. Since in theory, the Echo is like the big brother of the DDL-1 Digital Delay. It can do the exact same thing, but it can also be thrown in a creative direction while doing so. In this article, I would like to address a few tips and tricks regarding the Echo which might not be that obvious. While they are right in your face you may not have used the echo in this way more or less. I will skip the break out section in this article since I have also discussed that in a different one. So let's jump right into some, shall we?
Breaking out of the loop
Welcome back to another article about Propellerhead Reason. In this one I would like to address a few tricks I often apply myself to get out of the "loop". Where the original is based on a loop. Some of these ideas might be quite obvious, but then again I can just write them down in let's say 30 minutes time. The concepts off breaking out of a loop aren't that hard. It requires some logical thinking and it may require a few things to make it all work. Anyhow here are some ideas to get you started with it.
The FAWM 2018
Welcome back to another post about an event that took place last February. It was in fact the February Album Writing Month 2018. In this article I would like to write down some initial thoughts on the process, how I proceeded and end with some final thoughts of this event.
Mastering in Reason
In the previous few articles I have been writing down a few guidelines on mixing. And till this point I haven't even talked about the mastering process of it all. The major key to mastering a track is that the end goal of this process is to have everything as loud as you can. That is essentially the end game. The mixing process will play an important role in to how well the track can be mastered. Because a poor mix, results in to a poor master. Sure, some stuff will sound louder. When the mix is crap (just to use the word crap, it is subjective anyway), the master will be crap.
Parallel Compression while mixing
In the series of Mixing and Mastering we already covered most of the basics about compression. While compression inside the SSL Mixer in theory is similar as using a compressor as an insert effect. In some cases (not all) I prefer the method of parallel compression in Reason. This would be similar as New York compression. In theory you are adding an additional compressed signal next to the original (uncompressed signal). In theory this adds loudness on the starting point on the sound (until the compressed signal kicks in). So in theory, it still quite similar as normal compression as a send, but the difference is that you add the compressed signal next to the original signal. Thus resulting in a different type of dynamics.
Key Flux Capacitor
The following Combinator patch for Propellerhead reason 5 I am providing is part of a video I recorded a few days back. The initial idea was to create a toggle set up, where you are able to enable different sounds by triggering different keys (on the midi keyboard). While the initial set up used toggle buttons on Thor, this had one minor draw back: the buttons are not velocity sensitive.
