Sound Design Audio Effects

Noise making effect

Noise making effect

In this article, I want to explain the thought process behind the following effect. Since I had a weird childhood a lot of my soundscapes are just plain weird. Sometimes I like to use these type of effects just to have something unpredictable going on while at the same time make it musical. A lot of these type of effect relies on using the audio and make the audio shape the sound in different directions (also known as Audio to CV). At the same time, I want to have some form of manual control on this. The manual control can often be done by using rotaries while doing so.

Multiband reverb

Multiband reverb

Hi, in this article (in which I really won't waste my time, because it is Christmas) I am going to present a set of multiband reverb. The problem with most reverb is that they often have problems (or issues, let me put it that way) when triggering the different type of frequencies. This totally depends on the original sound that is used, which frequencies 'it' is triggering and how the reverb is set up in theory. Long decay times can make a reverb create a long sonic boom while using less damping on the higher frequencies it tends to hiss a lot (when using a lot of high-hats). I prefer to use different techniques that would fit in the realm of the multiband reverb. This technique simply allows me to create different reverb types per frequency I am using, thus it allows full control on how the reverb act like on a specific range of those frequencies.

Analog filters

Analog filters

In this article, I will do a small write-up about a technique I sometimes use to drive a filter into a different analogue type of filter effect. While normally you could use the Thor Filter with Self Oscillation. This is a nice touch since you are adding a sine wave on top of the waveform itself. This method is ideal for making your filter scream analogue (since in the analogue world this technique is often applied because they respond to frequencies). A lot of analogue filters also love the idea of using control voltage inputs where these inputs are controlled by oscillators (which are often free running or used in combination with a sequencer). These type of setups make the filter rather aggressive, yet unstable at the same time (something that a digital filter does not do since they often sound very clean). So with that said, I will create a setup and show you a method to put dust on a filter.

A Serial effect chain with switches

A Serial effect chain with switches

Welcome back to another article about setting up creative effect in a modular way. While back in the days of Reason 4 or Reason 5 this idea was my favorite thing to do in Propellerhead Reason. While since recently I picked up a Launchpad Pro I am using this technique more then ever. The problem with Rack Extensions is that they can result in to CPU issues (especially if you use more then 64 of them). This lead me to go back to the way reason kind of started and build my own custom effect chains from the ground up again (because they are way more CPU friendly to begin with). While native stock devices will sound a bit more direct and straight forward (to throw in one example the DDL-digital delay vs the Echo) it sometimes requires a bit more tweaking to make certain effects sound interesting enough. Sure it may require more units to make it work, but again from a CPU perspective they are still more friendly.

Stereo Field Enhancer Audio Effect

Stereo Field Enhancer Audio Effect

Welcome back to another Audio Effect unit article. I am just writing a bit more for this week  since I couldn't really record a video session last week (due to illness of the misses... but its getting better now). Anyway, today I will just share one of my little "secrets" I have been using since Reason 3. Since these type effects are totally up my alley, I would just share this device with you guys since you might benefit from the technique or device. While since Reason 3 you have the ..

Audio Effect Beat repeater delux

Audio Effect Beat repeater delux

Welcome back to another Audio effect unit. In this case I am going to build myself the "Beat Repeater Delux". A trick I have shared quite sometime ago is how to create a beat repeater in Reason 4. This trick is done using the Digital Delay. The reason for me to throw this topic on the void again is because there is a growing interest on how the set up I did with the U-He video. Well... the beat repeater effect is one of the essential component to set it all. If you happen to own Reason 6.5 or

Audio effect unit Subtle Stereo Effect using AM

Welcome back to another creative Audio effect unit. While there are lot of different ways to enhance the stereo field by either using different EQ over left right, use different delay settings over left vs right (eg: Haas effect) or use a unison with a stereo imager to widen up the sound. I always like to look at the Reason rack to take a different approach while creating a stereo field. Some techniques have been discussed in my Stereo 101 in Reason The trick I am going for this times is subtle ...

Audio effect unit Parallel Filters

Audio effect unit Parallel Filters

Welcome back to another Reason tutorial about setting up an audio effect unit. Since this week is turning out to become the "etch red" week. I felt like setting up a filter unit that would do something similar as setting up a parallel filter unit, yet keep things a tiny bit simple at the same time. Since parallel filtering using a Combinator patch in Reason has been there since Reason 2.5, I still tend to use these kind of setups in Reason 7 even since I have gotten used to do it like this. ..

Audio effect unit Multi State Filter

Audio effect unit Multi State Filter

Welcome back to another Reason article about creating an audio effect unit. In the previous article I wrote the basic concept about how an audio processor unit works and what kind of limitations you may run into. However, with these limitations you can still build creative setups that would note really require a gate. In this topic I will just try to create a set up that just does that. Multi State Filter In this article I will just write about a single patch I have made just to proof the point. This

Setting up an Audio effect unit Basics

Setting up an Audio effect unit Basics

Welcome back to another reason tutorial about setting up an audio effect. I have discussed the usage on the audio effect in the Combinator guide part 5. While audio effects can go in all kinds of different directions, I would like to dedicate some time and effort in to audio effects and the processing of audio. Some parts I will discuss are similar as setting up an insert effect in Reason 7. Since an insert effect acts in a similar way. To keep things general, I am going to stick with Combinator patches
