NN19 sampler basics

NN19 sampler basics

While the NN-19 sampler has been around for quite sometime, I have to explain what this sampler does and how it works. Simply because there seems to be some 'mis-understanding' about samplers and audio in general in Reason. The concept of the NN-19 sampler is a basic sampler player that house one or more samples in one sample player. There is in this case a relationship between the note it is played back, the speed of the playback and the pitch that you get in return (Keyboard Tracking). This usually means that a higher pitch results in to a shorter playback time. While lowering the pitch results in to a lower playback time.

Wavetable synthesis in Propellerhead Reason

Wavetable synthesis in Propellerhead Reason

In this article I am going to write down some food for thought on a technique like Wavetable Synthesis in Reason. The first technique I want to describe is the old school method on how things would be done. There is one device in the reason rack where wavetables can be manipulated at some level of degree: the NN-19 sampler or the NN-XT advanced sampler. While both will work, both have different charms regarding to work flow, controls and limitations. I'll admit this: with the new Propellerhead Reason 9.2 upgrade there is a whole new meaning to wavetable manipulation. But we'll tell that bed time story on another day.

Granular Sampler using the NN19

Granular Sampler using the NN19

The following technique is a golden oldie. Which I used a lot in the beginning when the NN-XT wasn't there yet. The biggest benefit that the NN-19 has to offer is that every setting on the sampler can be automated. Which includes the change of the pitch, the different envelopes, the filter type and everything that manipulates a sample. In this article I will mainly focus on the sample start position of the sampler. Since this setting works ideal in terms of the NN-19. While there are some limitations regarding this method I will try to describe the technique and the workflow issues that come with it while writing things down.

NN-19 in Propellerhead Reason

NN-19 in Propellerhead Reason

The NN-19 sampler is the basic sampler unit. It was introduced in the early versions of Reason, yet later on (Reason 2.5) the NN-XT was released. From some point of view you could say that the NN-19 became a bit obsolete after the release of the NN-XT. The NN-19 is a one layered sampler (compared to the NN-XT which is multi layered). The only real advantages the NN-19 has, most of the functions are editable on the fly (while there is a limitation with the NN-XT). If you use single samples, the nn-19 ...
