I am really having a blast with these poly modular synths as you can tell. The following build was just another idea to use native VO-1 Viking oscillators to trigger Frequency modulation. While sometimes I have a feeling that FM in the VO-1 feels odd (because it sometimes 'resets' itself, where I am not sure where this is coming from). But by doing FM just gentle it works fine and makes a pretty aggressive tonal character. I like FM in Thor, I also love FM in Blamsoft eXpanse. Sometimes I tried to do some FM inside the VK-1 (the synthesizer counterpart of the VO-1 Oscillator).
The build I am going with this one is to have most of the native devices from the polymodular synthesis shine through. Using the VO-1 Viking oscillator just to scream at your doorstep while the neighbors are just there asking you to stop all this madness! That was partially the idea here. Another trick I have been trying to apply here make use of the movement envelope generator to control different takes on the filter and the amplitude while doing so. This can be controlled by some rotary that extends the lifetime of the sound. So it can be arranged from being plucked to a full sustained sound with a twist of a rotary. That was part of the plan.
The combinator I have set up uses the following controls:
- Rotary 1: Filter frequency
- Rotary 2: Resonance
- Rotary 3: LFO changes being applied to the filter (using a scaler)
- Rotary 4: Envelope Time (this goes from pluck to sustained notes)
I have attached two effect for this device:
Button 1: Reverb
Button 2: A creative delay setup using The Echo (reason 6)
While this combinator was originally made in Reason 9 it should be compatible with Reason 6.5 and above.
Here is the download link to this patch. I'll see if I can make a video about this one.
