Welcome back to another article regarding sound design using Europa wavetable synthesizer in Propellerhead Reason 10. While a lot of people may have noticed that Europa itself does have some lack of- making use of Frequency modulation. While it is still there, you will need to understand how it functions and the way the FM operators are used inside Europa. Because comparing it to Thor itself, it just works a tiny bit different (but makes sense in a way).
Normal FM behavior is usually triggered by a carrier and a modulator. While the modulator will change the pitch of the other oscillator. With Thor, for instance, this can be done by hooking up an oscillator that is out there and connect any modulator to any carrier. Which has a benefit and a downside at the same time. Thor itself can produce something I always refer to being a 'complex' waveform. The best waveform to describe this would be a noise oscillator or heavy detuned multi-oscillator. If you use such a waveform as a modulator than the outcome would be noise.
In the following video I will explain how Europa functions regarding FM.
