The struggles of art and creativity a Hydlide story

The struggles of art and creativity a Hydlide story

Welcome back to another essay called the struggles of Art and Creativity. While art and creativity is something abstract it often is hard to explain in a few words like what it really is. It also leads to a lot of confusion and frustration at the same time when there is no real progress in making things happen. It does not always have to do deal with making music, that is a given. Because this is a music production site, I will try to keep things within the context of that idea. While at the same time several points I am going to make might also be related to painting something, or making a drawing or being creative in a general sense. I would also like to point out these are my own personal ideas and points. You may take out the elements which are best suited for your own needs and take those to heart. The rest could be considered as white noise if the connection isn't there (just to throw in a musical joke).

The FAWM 2018

The FAWM 2018

Welcome back to another post about an event that took place last February. It was in fact the February Album Writing Month 2018. In this article I would like to write down some initial thoughts on the process, how I proceeded and end with some final thoughts of this event.

Cinematic music changed

Cinematic music changed

Score editing for film or series has changed a lot in the last few years. Back in the days a lot of movies used a theme to capture the movie its style or character. It used to be a very memorizing theme that would play in your mind and these melodies would stick in your head like ... forever. Todays set pieces for music are more driven towards textures or 'beats' to drive the movie in a specific tone. The whole cinematic score writing thing has changed in the last years. It isn't about the theme anymore, it is more about how to make things drive to drive your audience more or less.

Happy thanksgiving

Happy thanksgiving

Welcome back to another whine post about my microphone, the way I talk in my videos, the amount of noise coming out of my nose and the rest (its black friday, so people are having days off). On a personal note, I will just clarify that I am fine. I have fun while making videos and I think that some people take Youtube (as a platform) way to serious being a free platform. I will also add, if I wanted to be a professional music teacher talking in English (which is not my native language since I was 4) I would have chosen a different career path.

Subscriptions on Rack Extensions

Subscriptions on Rack Extensions

Time to chime in to the whole debate on Subscriptions for Propellerhead Rack Extensions. I am going to write a personal opinion about it, where you may disagree or agree on the points I am trying to make. Case and point, this is an opinion based article (because I am biased and I don't care much about the fact that I am). So to start, I have mixed feelings about the subscription model of Propellerhead and the way it works. Let me start there. So this leads to the question: how does subscriptions for Rack Extensions work?

432 Hz vs 440 Hz

432 Hz vs 440 Hz

Time for a bedtime story before you can close your eyes. Since it has been a long and tiring discussion about the main reasons behind what is better: 432 Hz and 440 Hz. To be fair and honest here the main answer would be : "what sounds best for you!". Period and end of discussion.

But since this constantly comes back and it leads to a lot of misconceptions about the whole 440 Hz vs 432 Hz thing. Some people say it is the universal sound because it is in tune with the universe. Others compare it with the fibonacci sequence (where I have no idea where this comes from because it just does not make any sense). Others totally mix up the meaning or the definition of 440 Hz and why 432 Hz was ignored. So... With that intro out of the way, lets talk facts and forget the rumors.

The launchpad pro

The launchpad pro

About two weeks ago I have bought myself a launchpad pro to use with Propellerhead Reason. The main reason why I bought this device is because I needed a specific range of knobs that I could toggle on an off during a live performance act. Nothing more really. While I plugged this device in the computer and started to mess around with it I realized there are some really big issues with using the Launchpad pro native inside Reason itself.

RealTek Asio and Drivers in Reason

RealTek Asio and Drivers in Reason

I think it is time for a technobabble article about Propellerhead Reason. By reading different Q&A posts (Reddit, forums and so on) is that there is a lot on the subject about Realtek ASIO drivers and ASIO4ALL drivers. These subjects always come back. DirectX drivers are usually not really a subject matter but I am going to bring these on the table and discuss it. Just to put this in to context, the topic about audio card drivers has a history. First of, there is latency. We all know that latency is bad because of a few things: the responds time of what is happening on screen needs to be in sync with what you are hearing. Second, if you play a midi instrument a high latency will be a killer to work with. So in most of those cases you want to have a lower latency as possible but still enjoy what you are playing / making.

Top Ten must have Rack Extensions

Top Ten must have Rack Extensions

Before Reason 6 the devices were all stock devices. In 2012, Reason 6.5 was released. And this came with its own unique platform called Rack Extensions. While Rack Extensions work only in Propellerhead Reason, there are some successful VST ports. A good example is the Legend from Synapse came as a VST and Reason Rack Extension. Same thing could be said about Predator from Rob Papen. While Rack Extension System Development Kit is still being developed, there are new features added per release. A good example is loading up wave tables in Reason 9.2 (which has been added since January 2017) and Panels in the SDK 2.0 (Reason 7). It shows over time that the platform of RE is getting more mature while time progresses.
